1) Ok..right now I have Avast! Anti-virus on my computer as well as Spyware Blaster.
I use Glary Utilities and Malware Bytes as scanners.
I want to download BitDefender as another scanner in case the others miss things, which they do sometimes and I want to know if I can use BitDefender as a scanning utility rather than it actively protecting anything.
I ask because it doesn't seem too clear to me what BitDefender does.
2) I want to use word processing software from OpenOffice.Org but I don't want to download the entire program and I certainly don't want to install everything...is there a way to download just the word processor or do I have to download the entire program package?
Avast! and Malware Bytes should be plenty. I'd also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you feel Avast! isn't cutting it for you. It's generally not a good idea to bog your system down with too many security systems, so just stick with Malware Bytes and Avast/Microsoft Security Essentials. All three of those have great track records.
I actually downloaded Openoffice a few years ago and it's just the word processing program. I downloaded it on my netbook earlier this year and could only find it with the other programs with it. So likely not. There isn't a difference in the installation process and not much storage wise either, so I'd go ahead with it. Openoffice is a great alternative to Word.
I believe bitdefender protects your torrent downloads...
If you ever need an emergency Anti virus, i'd try sysclean, it runs without need of installation just follow the steps, everything you need should be here: http://about-threats.trendmicro.com/ArchiveVulnerability.aspx?language=us&name=HOW%20TO%20USE%20SYSCLEAN%20PACKAGE i've noticed that it removes threats without telling you, but still, its patterns are updated daily.
Can't really recommend anything else as what I can install is limited. :/
