Barrett Project

  • I'm thinking Barrett could simply express relief in chapter 11 without explicitly starting a new plotline yet (but hinting towards it). That'll help improve chapter 11's unwieldiness

  • The steward plotline really isn't bad, it just needs more references throughout Barrett's POV before he dies (*particularly* his last one). I'm thinking that it leads somehow to him sharing intel with the other rooms of House Spriggan as well as his willingness to trust (and be honest) with Francis during the BYSELF segment.

  • Fixing the "the three" plotline would also help a lot since Barrett's desire to make those three lords ties it in perfectly.

  • For the three plotline, Francis and Barrett's thinking mostly needs to be more clear. The length is also a problem, but the lack of clarity is what's causing it to blow out of proportion.

    The Three: the facts

  • 3 of the Faeins peeled off to pursue Jadzia and Ryden.

  • 3 gryphons controlled by AX left Francis's group

Anyone reasonable would connect these events together -- the three Faeins needed the enchanted gryphons for whatever reason.

    The Three checklist items

  • I don't think the timing in 20-AX is right for the three gryphons to peel off Francis's group, but maybe that happens later.

  • The three gryphons can flee in 21-F, but there is no ygg to the right. They should probably turn back around. Or there can be an ygg to the right thad AX blocks off too.

  • Barrett's thoughts around the three are very confusing, but he should ultimately put the pieces together -- three Faeheim spies, three that left Francis's group, three that left his own. This also needs to end up being a plot point somehow.

    Misc Barrett Stuff

  • Barrett never shares the bounty with the other members of House Spriggan. He really should. Tie it into his steward thing.

  • In 18-B, Barrett's thinking about the alliance makes less sense than I'd like.

  • Barrett's central motivation in that last paragraph is great, but it's never mentioned again -- include it somewhere else, probably within Vastwood proper. Again, useful for the steward plotline.

  • 13-B's battle thing should make an appearance when he does his scourge of quills and ink thing -- clears *his* head too. Might need to hold off until after whatever I'm doing in this post.

  • Should probably just dump all of his post-house pre-Vastwood vignettes + the Lionel one to figure out how best to handle this.

  • Barrett being a thorn in Francis's side is kind of a plot thread that goes nowhere, though there's certainly an opportunity to bring it up again when he thinks the Tree and Faeheim have joined forces.

    Nixed steward plotline idea

  • Fit it into his experiences in the Ashcroft house so it flows better. This also allows me to repurpose a lot of his overlong thinking.

  • Can still maintain the pairing between this plotline and house Spriggan uniting + the Lords thing as well (from a different angle).

  • Chapter 11 relief can have him *literally* thinking of taking a breather before thinking about wtf just happened. Might even be able to give it a Lord Hayden reference as something B learned from him.

  • Barrett should always refer to Aetos as the "great gryphon". At least until he thinks it's enchanted. Do this after the rewrite.

  • The convoluted plans of Francis and Barrett need to be trimmed down to something more efficient. Barrett's is especially egregious. Damn, Lionel too. Do barrett and probably Lionel after the Barrett project, and their changes will probably have repercussions on Francis' too.

I think going into *more* depth on the steward plotline and the three would be better -- it does help set up the 40 men, who are a huge mover of the plot. But the new ideas are great too. A rewrite in any case.

Unrelated to this project, but plant a seed that drives Lionel to go to the Rhizarium with Sutap.
