Mafia

day 1 blinding llight

Posted April 21, 2013 by Trever Leingod

The small, peaceful townie of Perfection, Nevada had slowly begun to grow again, despite having had to deal with two Graboid incursions in the past few decades.

They woke up one morning and found two of their residents dead – the first being Redack, who had been quite a mischievous trickster in his youth by hacking peoples’ computers and inserting typos into their messages. Eerily enough, as if out of spite of his known fear, Redack was found inside a casket filled with poisonous spiders inside White Thunder the mortician’s workplace. White Thunder himself was bitten by the spiders as he went to see why the previously empty casket was shut; thankfully no more victims were claimed as the bug exterminators, Trever Leingod and `Roxas`, took out the nasty arachnids.

However, the horror did not end there – inside the casket with Redack was a card that read:

“This town will be ours.

~The Godfather~

It was apparent there was a group of Mafia in town now… but they weren’t the only special visitors!

The town has been visited by two Elder Wizards as well as the Mafia. They are out to aid the town in abolishing their Mafia but they cannot directly intervene.

Let’s have a look at the roles and the new, power-central way of the game.

Townie - A regular townie. They can get a power pack from the Elder Wizards.

The Governor - The Governor is a town-sided role that has the incredible power to pardon. He or she may choose to stop ALL killings from occurring during the day round.

The Commissioner - At night, this role can investigate one player. If the person is a member of the town, he or she will show up as "innocent." If the person is a member of the Mafia, he or she will show up as "guilty."

The Dragon - This master martial artist takes things into his own hands against the Mafia. Once per night, this role can kill someone. If this role is selected to be killed by any means, the host will notify the Dragon and will flip a coin in his thread. If it lands on heads, the Dragon will fend off the attack. If it lands on tails, the normal set of events takes place (death, etc).

Townie Powers Packs:

Only a vanilla townie is eligible to get one; power roles retain their default abilities for the entire game. Every night, the Wizards will randomize the packs to be distributed and also randomize which townies get the packs.

A townie can use the pack immediately or hold onto the pack until they choose to use it, but they cannot have more than one pack at a time. If for some reason they want another chance at getting a better pack but do not wish to use the current one, they have the option of discarding it. The Outsider pack and Movie Goer pack are the only ones that the player is forced to use.

Med Kit Pack – Gives the player the power of the Doctor role for one night.

Spy Pack – Gives the player the power of the Spy for one night. They will choose one mafia role and be able to see a copy of the last post that mafia role made in the mafia thread at the end of the previous Day round. They will not know who made the post, and all Mafia names or nicknames will be filtered out.

Arsonist Pack – Gives the player the power of the arsonist for one night.

Sensor Pack – Gives the player the power of the sensor for a day.

Dentist Pack – Gives the player the power to visit someone in the night, drug them and pull out their teeth, which causes them to be silent the following day.

Medium Pack – Gives the player the ability to view the dead thread for a night. The pack will not be available until at least one player has died.

Potion Pack – Gives the player the ability to save a person from death. The player will be notified at night by the Wizard of who will die the next morning by the Mafia’s hand and will be given the choice of saving them rather than randomly guessing who to protect. This pack will only occur once during the game, and it has a very low probability of occurrence.

Journalist Pack – Gives the player the ability to try out their journalist skills for a night. They may write up an article for the town to see that morning. If they happen to influence a lynching that day, they are given an extra point.

Outsider Pack – The player gets a nice snazzy outfit from the wizard, but unfortunately it makes them look guilty to the Commissioner the night they get it and to the sensor the following day.

Movie Goer Pack – The player gets tickets from the wizard to see a movie at the theater the next night for free! Unfortunately wanting to see the movie makes them so excited that they head to the theater before any lynching and thus are not able to cast a vote that day.

Packs are subject to change or be removed, your Wizards will inform you of such.

Mafia:

Godfather - If checked by the Commissioner, will show up as town-allied, or innocent. If there is a tie in votes for a Mafia night kill, the Godfather’s vote will count as the tie-breaker.

Mafioso - A regular Mafia member with no special powers. They become a Godson if one of the original Godsons dies first.

Godson – A Mafia guy who is trying out various skills to see which job he is best suited for. During the night round, the host will randomize the skill set and give one to the Godson to try that night.

Skill Sets:

Godfather skill - Allows the player to try out the Godfather’s ability to appear innocent to the Commissioner for the night, in hopes of becoming his Godfather’s eventual successor.

Assassin skill - Gives the player the power of the Assassin for a night.

Trickster skill - Gives the player the power of the Trickster for a night. The Trickster can choose to silence any particular role they choose, including a potential power pack role they may want to avoid speaking up that day.

Janitor skill - Gives the player the power of the Janitor for a night.

Hypnotist skill - Gives the player to hypnotize any chosen player for the night round. During that night round, the target player will not be able to use any power they may have.

Party Night - The player decides to take the night off to party and accidentally has too much to drink, gets a hangover, thus effectively being silenced for the next day round.

Mafioso skill - The player decides to lay low and not get experimental that night, so they just act as a regular Mafioso.

Game Notes: The power packs/skill sets all have their own frequency of occurrence; the more useful the power, the rarer it is. Records will be kept on how often each set is given out and how many times a player gets selected to receive a set. If a particular set is used a lot, its frequency will drop and the probability will be dispersed to other sets as fairly as possible. Every time a player is selected to receive a pack, their probability to get a pack goes to down and the probability is distributed to players who have not been selected yet.

Scratch that... I just moved the Dead thread off the sticky list, no point having it up there until someone actually dies.

As the sun rose up on the horizon, the town stumbled out of their houses with hands raised to block the light from their eyes.

All seemed to be normal for the town, aside from the stench from White Thunder and Redack's corpses and the recently destroyed statue at the town's center.

And so, the town began its deliberations on a lynching.

I think it would be more appropriate if the title was Blinding LLight; however, since I'm the first one to post in the Day 1 round. I got nothing!

Ha! I was thinking the same thing.

I too have nothing, but I wouldn't expect otherwise at this point.

Done!

April 22, 2013
Trever Leingod

I think we all immidiatly thought of LLight at seeing the title.

So Redack was murdered in the funueral parlor. He then went on to haunt that abandoned manor at the edge of town. Thunder, who's death was accidental collateral, decided to be a friendly ghost helping impoverished people in Africa instead.

Feral

Poor Redack. He's so good the Mafia had to kill him before the game even started...

April 22, 2013
Jo Nathan

So I'm thinking whenever someone uses a spy pack they should immediately reveal the result.

Same with the sensor.

The mafia have less incentive to kill you for revealing info because you aren't the sensor or the spy. You just had the ability for one night and now you don't.

But doesn't that... um... give you're role away? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought all regular townies have abilities such as that. It would narrow down the Cop role I feel.

(OOG: Game hosts- check the Complaints forum and PM Redack. Thanks.)

Revealing their results would eliminate that person as being the Commi.. Cop, yes. ;)

True, but we've got 18 people at the moment. 11 of them are townies. If one or two townies reveal the results from their power packs it isn't going to really single out the commissioner/cop.

Fair enough. Though this puts you on my radar. I'm all for getting information, but I really am hesitant with that sort of exposure. If someone were to ignore the one or two, then it certainly puts the town at risk... especially towards the later rounds when numbers can be critical.

I suspect it would, but I'm not advocating a full on roleclaim. If you get a result, there's no reason not to speak up. We get a few useful pieces of information from a few townies with the right packs and we'll be sitting pretty.

Have to say you're on my list for opposing what should be an effective strategy against the mafia {O:-)}

Sharing a rumor already, eh Vandy?

April 22, 2013

I feel that Dooku's strategy is pretty sound. Therefore, I am inclined to put Helius on my list as well. It seems to me like he's trying to sow seeds of suspicion as early as possible so they will grow and eventually blossom into the lynching of someone who is innocent, and he was able to use Dooku as his target.

Could be wrong though. Lancer did the same to me in the Halloween game and we were both innocent.

You vote for someone who thinks is the bad guy, but some of them will make you think they're not... just go with your guy. You analyze the situation.

As a professional, I have to think end game. Social workers are taught to think of termination at the very first session. I'm treating this as the first session and thinking of the finale already. I don't know what will happen in the middle, but I hope the end is a townie victory for all of us.

I'm playing consistently as I did last game. No one has room to hide or to suggest things that "could" be damaging to the town. I think they have the right to defend their actions, which Dooku did. And I respect him for it, but I don't have any idea who the mafia are. I'm just saying the strategy seems suspicious considering that in the end game... numbers matter.

April 23, 2013
Helius

words, words, words

nothing matters. yet

April 23, 2013

Vandy's probably right. The usual no vote on the first day. No one's suspicious enough to kill yet.

April 23, 2013

Unless anyone wants to come out as mafia, we should probably just get the no kill over with and see who dies tonight.

Always.

April 23, 2013

Dooku's suggestion sounds reasonable as long as you can pull it off early enough. The longer it takes, the more information you're giving up in exchange.

Guys I think you might have missed it, but SBP slipped and accidentally revealed he's mafia.

Alright, alright, I admit it guys.... I'M THE SILENCER. Take me away...

-Speed Bike Pro, Day 1

To me, this strongly implies that Speed is mafia. Not only that, but I think he's the Silencer. "I'M THE SILENCER" is what tipped me off; it indicates that he's actually not only mafia, but probably the Silencer.

April 23, 2013
MajorasMask9

Now Majora is obviously taking a little joke too far. He's already trying to plant the seeds of doubt and try to make himself look innocent early on so we don't think about him later on down the line.

Obviously Mafia. I mean... come on. (fp)

April 23, 2013
Female Alpha Wolf

I'm somewhat inclined to agree with FAW here. Not like Majora to jump to such an obvious error of a conclusion. Besides, the only silencing role on this game is the Dentist pack, a TOWNIE sided role.

On the other hand, not like FAW to be so forward. I'd expect her to mention her observation, but not to lead the lynching charge.

Not sure why, but something is bugging me about helius...

For now...
