end have yourself a merry little christmas

Posted December 10, 2012 by Feral

Christmas Village was awakened in the middle of the night to attend an urgent meeting.

Ariving at the workshop, all were relieved to see that there were no bodies, but all the more confused to what this was about.

Humbug representitive, Scrooge, came forward with a bombshell; "We forfeit! You guys win! You can have your Christmas."

And thus ended the most painful Christmas game in history.

Xhin-Cindy Lou Who
chiefsonny- Scrooge
Count Dooku-elf
hezekiah- Santa Claus 2
Helius-elf
Trever Liengod-elf
White Thunder-Humbug
Roxas-Frosty
White Lancer-The Grinch
CtR Black-Santa Claus 1
Jo Nathan-Jacob Marley
The Bandit-elf
MajorasMask-Rudolph
Female Alpha Wolf-Humbug
Frustro-Tiny Tim
Serpe-Ghost of Christmas Future
Castrael-elf

So, yeah, even I thought that game was just getting ridicoulously dull. The Mafia asked to call it quits and give you the win.

The Humbug thread contains 500+ replies and is hard to load. Be careful with it.

Thanks for playing and have a great holiday!

If you will read the last Day round post in the Humbug thread I hope you will understand my reasons.

@Jo Nathan, sorry. Wish you had been around.

@MM9 Nothing personal. You imo are a great player. I couldn't talk much for fear of fingering the others, so I tried to just be a pain in the ass.

    @To town. Congrats.

    Almost forgot.

Feral, good job. You can't make people want to play.

Let me tell you, as fun as hosting is, it is also EXHAUSTING! So. Much. Typing.

Majora, you were the game MVP by far. Some of the best playing I ever saw.

Bandit also played a Hell of a game. Very good insite and observation.

I want to personally give props to the Humbugs. Were it not for a single mistimed reply by Jo that fingered him and shoveled heavy doubt on FAW, they might have swept this thing. Thunder did an amazing job of turning an oversite on his part in day 1(accidentally getting himself silenced) into a huge advantage by using it to make him look innocent.

chief was an AWESOME Scrooge and really made the game.

Xhin, I need to have a talk with Yeano about your actions. I have a serious problem with people who feel an outside position of power gives them the right to break rules.

Fine with me. I'm beyond burned out.

I think you guys could have still won if Thunder had just named Trever as guilty. Saying you forgot to check (even if it was true, as it turns out) just sent up a massive flare. I would have still voted for FAW that round, because it was the obvious choice, but I really thought you were innocent and would have eventually gone with Trever as the last kill before chief. : / Maybe Majora or someone else knew you were guilty before that point, but I didn't.

I was only unenthusiastic at the end because no one was replying to the thread. I was still checking, I just had nothing to add. The only thing I thought of doing was false role claiming Santa, because I had an invulnerability and was hoping the mafia would waste a night vote on me and give us some breathing room with the possibility that Thunder was guilty. But, Majora wanted the real Santa to claim, which I still don't understand, so I just kept my mouth shut.

Even with the Cas mishap, I think the double Santa thing seriously broke the game for the town. It just wasn't very fair.

    Still, it was fun.

    The Bandit

Well, this game was pretty fun, but I'll probably write a more detailed post later on. I just wanted to get this thing I've had written in a txt file posted, since this is the only place I can think of posting it:

Proposition for a new Mafia mechanic: Voting for "Good Players"

I think it would be a lot better for players, at the end of a game of mafia, to vote for other players who they feel deserve "Good Playing" points. After hosting two games myself, I've found that:

1)The host may not have an entirely good idea of who actually deserves Good Playing points when they're watching it from "outside the game."
2)The entire concept of "good playing" is subjective, and therefore a system where point assignments are influenced by players who participated in the game as opposed to just one person who didn't participate seems like a much more efficient way of ensuring everyone is happy.

I imagine it working as something like this:

    -Game ends. Results are posted.
-Players pick 1-3 (maybe more, depending on the amount of players) people who they feel deserve Good Playing points. Player's can't vote for themselves, and won't be required to vote.
-Once everyone has voted, or a certain amount of time has passed, the host will add up the votes each player got and assign good playing points based on the number of votes, as well as their own opinion.

For example, if [Person A] got 15 votes in one game, and [Person B] got 1 vote, the host could decide to give [Person A] +3 points for good playing, [Person B] 0 good playing points, and assign other points based on how many votes the other players got relative to each other. However, if [Person B] did seem like someone who played well but got overlooked because of some unfortunate game event, the host could decide to give [Person B] +1 point despite only getting a single vote. This would ensure that players couldn't get obnoxiously high points each round, but still get the points they'd deserve. A system like this would allow the host and players to have some form of input on who gets good playing points.

Only reason I'm posting this here is because I donno where else I could post it. I think it would be best for Feral to give out points on his own this game; this is just something I'd thought about a while ago that could possibly be used in future games.

Just something I thought about a while back; has nothing to do with this game at all. Would like to hear some input on it.

    December 10, 2012
    MajorasMask9

even if it was true, as it turns out

It was {:P} I wanted to just go for it yesterday but I was afraid (probably rightfully so) that we would still vote off FAW and then someone would check my result and see I was lying. So I ended just saying I forgot, which was true anyway. But I shoulda just gone for it yesterday, I guess.

I think a little break from the game would be nice as well. I'm also open to hosting the next one if no one else wants to.

    December 10, 2012
    White Thunder

Maybe just keep the host assigned points as they are, but have a separate +1 or +2 for one player based on votes. I don't really care too much about the points, and making it seriously complicated would only make me care less.

Yeah, I'm for putting the next game on hold. Sorry to see the Humbugs gave up, but given how the game was unfolding, it was probably for the best. On a side note, Majora became a BEAST Round 4 onward. If everyone followed his plan, it would've been a sound win for the Village anyhow.

Gonna feel bad for pushing my friend in front of the bus though

WHY? YOU SHOULD BE SO USED TO IT BY NOW! >:0 I kid, love ya gal~

    Good game, everyone.

So, chiefsonny. Do you want to host the next game?

    December 10, 2012
    Yeano

Well, I think this is the one time that one side has given up

"Given Up" is imo a little harsh. I would prefer to think of it as

    "Resigning".

I had resigned myself to the fact that the other 3 players of the Mafia team had no desire to play or win the game. If they had, we could have won the game at the end of the last day by showing up and voting.

Why continue a game that had become dead. Even the Host was bored.

    December 10, 2012
    chiefsonny

And another thing about the Mafia Games, which as you know I enjoy playing very much.

When did these games become all lovey-dovey.

"OH, I hope "anyname" will still be my friend after I vote him/her off"

"My friend "anyname' will never speak to me again"

It's a game. Mafia kills townies, Townies kill Mafia. A true friend will understand that.

At the end of the game, you tell everyone that it was not personal and move onto the next game.

    I was in church...

I admit that made me laugh. Also `Roxas`, I just wanted to clarify that I'm a guy. Frustro was just talking out of his bootyhoole. Then again, he always does. Always.

Overall, I think this particular game made good use of the potential these new roles had. But compared to other games, on a whole it was a of a miss for me. Having been both Mafia and Townie twice, I can't help but get the feeling that every game invariably results in a Mafia curbstomp
(maybe that's deliberate, I'm not quite sure). Following Majora's lead, I propose tweaking the mechanic by bringing the Mafia-Townie ratio closer to 2:1.5 as opposed to 2:1, maybe adding a Mafioso player or two like we did in the Halloween game. That way, evn if the Mafia end up dropping like dominoes, they'd have a little more of a fighting chance.

But what do I know? I'm just the 800-pound gorilla in the room.

Yeah. I was taking a nap before my baptism and didn't wake up in time (though it obviously wouldn't have worked anyway). But I agree on a Mafia break. The game is starting to annoy me more than entertain me.

    {:P}

The two times I've been mafia I've lost.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat.

With the exception of the Halloween game, I think the past few games were very winnable for the Mafia had it not been for one or two key wrong moves, rather than imbalance. In this game, a second Santa would not have been nearly as detrimental to the Mafia had we not basically all blown our cover at that point.

Is it possible that I'm a source of imbalance in these games? In my first game I was a townie and basically handed the win to the Mafia, and then both times I'm Mafia I eff up horribly.

    December 11, 2012
    Jo Nathan

It's a game. Mafia kills townies, Townies kill Mafia. A true friend will understand that.

I'll have you know Yeano killed me in a game of mafia once, and I only cried for 20 minutes.

I saw a lot of complaints about my fake Ghost reply in the mafia thread. I honestly didn't expect that reaction at all! I guess what I was curious about was why that seemed like an unfair strategy; it's not really any different than faking a cop result (as I saw someone bring up) and had a huge potential to backfire if The Bandit was actually mafia and they decided to go along with it. Maybe it's because I was looking at it from the perspective of "oh god if The Bandit is actually guilty I just screwed the town over" but it seemed like a nothing-too-out-of-the-ordinary play.

As for why I did it, I was under the impression that the Ghost was either FAW or Castrael (I was wrong!). I saw that both of them brought up The Bandit and myself as possible lynch targets. The Bandit's actions in the beginning of that round made me think he was innocent on top of that, so I added that part to the message in order to prevent him from being lynched. Also, with the idea that chief was a confirmed mafia role that could just troll the town, I thought it would be fun if I could taunt back and be like "We both know that part of this is real and part of it is fake but there's nothing you can do about it!" right back at him :).

I'm surprised the round where we "confirmed" Dooku's innocence worked out so well. Looking through the mafia thread, it seems they knew who I spied on and what messages I saw. I assumed they would think I was roleblocked and had no results that round (and was kind of counting on the surprise element), but apparently they knew what I saw before the night even ended. Had I known that, I probably would have looked at that round a lot differently.

And I probably would have been fine with a false Santa claim Bandit if you were going somewhere with it. I just didn't really think the mafia would kill Santa. I kind of don't want to post a convoluted analysis post-game, but it boiled down to the fact that whoever is Santa could prove their identity (at least, more easily than a generic elf), and if the mafia killed Santa, not only would Santa still give out presents, but someone else would become a new Santa, so there wasn't really much benefit to killing Santa from the mafia's perspective. The only way the mafia could prevent the real Santa from becoming a confirmed innocent would be for one of their own to counterclaim, and if they did that and killed Santa the liar would be exposed.

And I think that's all I was going to say. I liked this game but honestly wish it went on until the end (despite the inactivity). Ah well

    MajorasMask9

    @ Jo:

But don't sell yourself short, especially when in the game before last you were a nigh-omniscient Mafia member. I refuse to declare a person with low self-esteem my nemesis, anyway.

    December 11, 2012
    Frustro

@Frustro: Point taken. And I certainly would not want to put my nemesis-ship at risk by being pathetic.

I saw a lot of complaints about my fake Ghost reply in the mafia thread.

You know, I actually thought this was a fair tactic. It was definitely completely unexpected, that's for sure.

Looking through the mafia thread, it seems they knew who I spied on and what messages I saw.

    Yeah... after you came out and revealed your true thoughts, I was hoping you'd think I was trying to pull reverse psychology on Count Dooku. I wonder how things would have went if I claimed Serpe was guilty instead... {:P}

    Jo Nathan

So, chiefsonny. Do you want to host the next game?

    @Yeano,

I'm going to take a pass on hosting the next game.

But thanks very much for asking.

    So, out of these people:

    chiefsonny: 40
    MajorasMask9: 35
    white lancer: 32
    `Roxas`: 31
    #85: 29
    hezekiah: 29
    Shadowwalked: 27
    White Thunder: 26
    Helius: 25
    Count Dooku: 23
    Xhin: 21
    CtR Black: 21
    Feral: 21
    Black Yoshi: 20

    Who hasn't hosted yet?

    December 11, 2012
    Yeano

I think that #85 has next shot at hosting. #85, do you want to host? (if you're here?)

You have 24 hours to respond, or you will be skipped.

White Thunder, if #85 does not want to host or does not respond, do you want to host next?

    December 11, 2012
    Yeano

I should have the points up sometime today.

    December 11, 2012
    Feral

What are the points for anyway?

Also, I'm going to have to do better and not keep guessing every chance I get. :P I did it in the beginning on purpose (just for some kicks from Xhin and Dooks :P).

    December 11, 2012
    Castrael

My second game to survive... and it appears I was still up on the lynch list for some people. I'm going to be simply amazed if I ever get through a game as a townie and actually manage to convince people of my innocence.

    December 11, 2012
    Trever Leingod

Cas, your points determine what Mafia medal you have. 1-9 gets you bronze, 10-19 gets you silver, and 20+ gets you gold and the ability to host a Mafia game.

    Scores now up.

    December 11, 2012
    Feral

    Ah, okay. :D Thanks.

    December 11, 2012
    Castrael

White Thunder, if #85 does not want to host or does not respond, do you want to host next?

Yeah, I'd be down, but I can't even start thinking about it until this Sunday, probably. I think a lot of people wanted a break anyway.

    December 11, 2012
    White Thunder

^ I don't think that'd be a problem. I'd like a break too, as does pretty much everyone else.

    December 11, 2012
    MajorasMask9

Gosh, he didn't seem like the Grinch at all. How could we have missed that?

Well, I was trying not to look like the Grinch because I didn't want to get lynched! Guess it worked too well. :(

I see lancer adopted my strategy of speaking in rhyme...

Yup! It seemed only appropriate and I enjoyed it when you did it last game. Plus it kept me from vomiting my thoughts all over the post like usual.

Three rounds to live? Do I look like white lancer to you?!

Bahaha, gotta love having that reputation. Although I wouldn't have been complaining about having three rounds this time.

Anyway, I thought the balance of this game was fine. Remember that the Mafia would have been in good shape had they killed anyone other than me the first round (though I pretty much expected it), and they also got a bit unlucky in that they saved Bandit from Roxas. Also, I tend to think that any lie is fair game in Mafia. Mostly because most lies can also backfire horribly (if Majora had been wrong about Bandit, the Town would probably have been screwed).
