game 1 round 12 yo

Posted March 4, 2013 by Redack

Round 12 begins 8th Feb (Redack has work Thursday night and thus cannot update the round as scheduled, giving you all an extra day and I'm out for a family meal on the 6th because it's my Mum's birthday so we can't update round early either)
Ratios
Original: 8 Humans - 1 Golem - 3 Aliens
Current: 7 Humans - 1 Golem - 2 Aliens

The Story So Far

Round 10

Castrael the alien is burned alive! The station chef declares New N' Tasty now on the menu, in a statement he insisted there was no connection!

Round 9

(Nothing I can put that doesn't give away information so here's some filler!)
The station is declared a health and safety disaster zone by EarthGov inspectors who shortly after making that bold statement were found dead, it is believe they tripped over a loose cable.

Round 8

After the series of exciting events, occupants of the station opt to continue exploring and gathering information as they attempt to figure out the meaning of their lives. Meanwhile, the aliens are no doubt plotting to overthrow them!

Round 7

The power is back. Unfortunately the systems malfunctions have allowed the escaped creature to secure it's position and disable containment protocol.

Round 6

Count Dooku declares Caestrel to be an alien & Lancer to be a Golem and so the crew must decide if they believe him or not. Meanwhile in the Power Generator a kind soul switches the power core back on.

Round 5

Emergency lights are on and the people can see again! Alliances and enemies are forged as the occupants begin to see the severity of their situation. Meanwhile in the Bio-Lab Gratchius is found dead.

Round 4

With the power off the occupants of the station cannot see each other. Some become paranoid that they aren't alone in the room as others use the darkness to their advantage. Fortunately someone has the clever idea of turning the emergency lights on!

Round 3

Someone turns the power off whilst the unsuspecting occupants of the station continue to explore.

Round 2

The occupants continue to move around and mingle. No major events occur.

Round 1

The players awaken in the respective locations with no memory of their colleagues or themselves. Their only clues are in their inventories, revealing to themselves who they are and what they can do!

As usual contact me via notifications or AIM to let me know if something is wrong or if you have questions.

From now on I will also be make a new post each round to make it easier to tell when the last round update was, plus I will state when the next round begins.

Also congrats on our second player to roll a 100! (Well I rolled it but it was for them).

Anyone got the reference in the title yet (without googling it)?

March 5, 2013
Redack

Nope. Not getting it nor googling it.

Huh. Guess I should check back in this thread more regularly. I had no idea an alien was eliminated until just now.

Also, is it just me or do the humans have an extraordinary advantage?

I feel the sides may be slightly unbalanced, it's the first game so it was never going to be perfect.

Two aliens have the very powerful ability to evolve and I'm being quite generous in what I allow them to evolve in order to compensate for their lower numbers.

Also, the reference is Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

The first three items are foods produced by "Rupture Farms" with the final one being the new food they intend to produce. Very fun platformer that I had on PS1. It's being remade for modern consoles & PC with updated grsphics but the same gameplay... I'd definitely recommend it ;)

There's some new features so things may look a little different. Ignore them for now, carry on as normal and I'll explain them at the next available moment :)

Wow! Love the "Memory" feature, great stuff.

This explains why my inventory disappeared last night I suppose :P

I'm going back to work in a couple of hours so this is just a reminder that the round won't end today like it should... My next reply will be about the new features :)

New Features

Memory

Memory is a completely history of the actions you've made so far in the game and the outcomes I've set against them (please note, outcomes is also a new feature and so not been used yet). Going forward this will be useful for you to check back what you've done and what happened as a result.

Outcomes

I can now enter in what happens from your action. So if you search for something I can state what you got, or if you find nothing. Very useful for helping you guys know if I intentionally gave you nothing or if it was an oversight. Also useful for just generally understanding why things might have happened.

Mid-Round Updates

Because of this, I can now process some actions mid-round. I didn't do it before because it would've become a confusing mess if you searched for items and then items randomly appeared in your inventory without any feedback. Similarly there was no way for me to say "you found Redack in that room you just searched" without telling everyone else, this also became difficult if you searched a room and then moved room because chances are you'd be with people I couldn't reveal this information to... So yea :)

Inventory Change

The inventory has been split out into three sections.
"Inventory"- All items will be put in here
"Abilities"- All abilities, or general "buffs", will go in here
"Wounds"- All wounds, or general "debuffs", will go in here
The reason for this is because I started using the inventory for all three of these and I thought it might become confusing for you guys so it made sense to separate them out for easier viewing and generally just making more sense.

Behind the Scenes

Xhin has made it easier for me edit the posts, which will probably speed up the round updates (as will being able to update them mid-round).

He's added a new method for me broadcasting messages, such as the station's comm system that Dooku was using.

And a bunch of host tools to use the other features he's added.

Conclusion

A couple of things aren't quite how I wanted them when I asked Xhin to do it, so there'll be a few alterations to come but the features that I wanted are implemented (plus a couple extra that Xhin came up with).

On the whole these new features should make the game run smoother and better. Most of it won't be used until the next round because I'm too busy today and tomorrow I'll just be focusing on updating the round... But hopefully this'll keep us all happy :)

Oh, so the memory thing IS new. Probably should have checked this post before I asked. :P

Anyone that's checked the memory page will notice we're on round 21... This is because there's currently no way for me to clear actions for rounds, so shadowwalked's game interfered when I tried going 1, 2, 3, etc. I think I started at like 11?

New game features are great. Really like the Memory feature. Inventory thing is much better also.

When I get chance I'll see about separating out abilities, wounds and inventory. Otherwise we'll start using it in game 2.

Yay for mid-round updates!

I have a question. If I'm having what I think is a friendly conversation face-to-face with another player and he uses sneak mode to attack me, something that my character would very much see and react to if it happened in real life... would you take some kind of action to balance it out, like overriding sneak mode or something?

~redack sneak attacks Jo Nathan to stop him asking difficult questions~

I'm unsure, I'd like to look at it as: they sneak attack you after the conversation whilst you're looking the other way or something(thus an explanation for why combat occurs at the end of a round.

I can very easily de-sneak any post I want but it kinda seems like there's no point in sneak mode if I just overrule it because you happened to talk to them in the post.

If you guys want me to start doing that, then I can do but bare in mind it relies on me being online to make it happen and then also there's nothing to stop someone just doing the action towards the end of the round when I'm unlikely to have chance to inform you it happened (since I tend to get home from work and then as soon as I go on my PC I start the aliens round update).

Also round ending. Unsure how long this will take as I've gotta get used to the new tools but some of them should speed it up. We'll see :)

Redack

I'm not sure I understand what JN's talking about, but I would assume talking to some face to face would be a message area posting and when the talking was over, a player could then post in the Action area that he shoots the player as one of his actions and make the action in sneak mode.

Irl it would be like walking away from someone and when they aren't looking, hide behind a desk and pop a cap in them.

That's how I imagine it Chief, if someone specifies they do it as a sneak action then it's logical to assume it doesn't occur right there and then when the person is looking.

Redack

I actually like that explanation; ergo, I withdraw my concern. Just trying to make things difficult for you, that's all. (:D)
