game 24 night 1 down the oneway track

Posted January 20, 2014 by MajorasMask9

"They were there when they went in the train, it left quite the impression"

Saturday, February 8th
8:30am

It was a Saturday morning. A small group of 17 travelers were on their way to find a new place to settle. The previous week had left them moving out from village to village, unable to find a place the group could call home. They left on a train to wherever it may bring them.

The train had several Cabins where each of the passengers could rest for the days and nights. There was an exquisite dining area that felt quite classy for a train. At the front of the train was the train's Engine Room, where the Conductor stayed, operating the train through the days and night.

MajorasMask9, a Staff Member on board the train, had been seen by some of the travelers the previous night. He had helped them get situated for the long train ride and offered assistance if anything further was necessary. However, the passengers were quick to notice that MajorasMask9 had noticeably less of a presence this morning.

One of the passengers awoke and left their cabin to check on things. They walked by the Love Suite and noticed a note pinned on the outside of the door:

To my Dearest, on this 8th of February

To sleep upon these blessed tracks,
In lieu of Mafia attacks,
Four Mafia to take us down,
Two lovers' love to make them drown

Confused, the passenger continued to walk to the Dining Hall which felt eerily empty. That is, until they noticed MajorasMask9's dead body in the back. A short message was written and left on the body.

"There are four killers among you. There will be a death each night."

As the passenger returned, and more and more people began to discover the body, commotion and disorder ensued for the following hour until the passengers regained their composure. A few of them attempted to enter the Engine Room to contact the Conductor, but the room was locked and there was no response to their banging on the door.

It was just the 17 of them, alone on a train. Four among them were killers, but who? And just what would be done to stop this? That's when the discussions began...

Replacement

Round ends in 72 hours or after 12 votes for the same option.

I would also like to address some minor points worth mentioning:

  • Bad Break Billy will always appear as visiting whoever the mafia attempts to kill, even if they are Nurse protected. Last night I said that this wouldn't be the case but I am not sure why I did as I had this planned beforehand.

  • The Ballot Forger does not appear to visit anyone at night.

Well I must admit I am a bit relieved that we don't have to worry about that Serial Killer anymore.

I thought since night talk was on, we'd have more to go off of for Day 1 than we usually do. Nothing really seems to stand out to me, though... except I guess I'd be a bit inclined to vote for The Bandit for revenge because of his immediate Townie claim, but then again I'd be jaded too if I had gotten Townie all four goddamn times..... (duck) So I can let that go, I suppose.

That's pretty wrong, I think the game has shown plenty of times that townies can be just as influential in the lynch kills as the mafia. In fact the mafia are more likely to avoid influencing the kill because it'll draw attention to them. Though, that's not to say they won't.

    January 21, 2014
    Moonray

I can probably agree to that, Moonray. Anything is possible too. I'll look more into it next time.

I only said what I said because what happened last time; mass role claim. Anyone can lie.

    January 21, 2014
    Castrael

I'm interested to see how the Lovers role plays out. Though, it makes me hesitant to go forth with something like a Day 1 lynching unless we have something solidified - even if one of the Lovers role-claims to avoid the lynching, then the Mafia has a good shot at killing two people that night if they know who at least one of the Lovers are. Then again, there's the Nurse to protect the one that would reveal in this case, so...!

I'm not usually a fan of role-claiming, but in this particular instance, I would be in favor of Bad Break Billy revealing his or herself early on, potentially Day 1. If it's something we can establish earlier on, then we don't have to worry about skewed results by the Tracker. If there's more than one person who claims Bad Break Billy, then at least we have something substantive to argue about.

Also very interested to see how the Oracle plays out. I played this IRL a few days ago (a friend was the Oracle, he checked me Night 1 but also died Night 1, I was revealed as the Public Investigator but was also Silenced for the day round (cry) but Town won that game anyways so it was GG). While we can look at it as a role that either helps or hurts the town, if the Oracle dies early on, at least we'll have either a confirmed Guilty or confirmed Innocent (or I guess Replacement), but we should do our best not to lynch our Oracle (well, obviously), but I guess what I mean is if it comes down to it and they seem under the gun, the Oracle would likely be wise to reveal. I guess this is applicable to any power role, but I suppose my point is that the Oracle is arguably the last person we'd want to mislynch.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Bagels? Muffins?

    Onnnn that note:

I'm the Bad Break Billy. I was thinking of role-claiming anyway but I was going to put it off til day 2 if no one brought it up.

    January 22, 2014
    Shadowwalked

Mayhap one of our Power Roles should roleclaim on Day 2 so that the Replacement could do their work...

    January 22, 2014
    Black Yoshi

Well there's no guarantee that the Replacement would cooperate. That player could end up replacing a Mafia member.

    January 22, 2014
    Jo Nathan

Didn't even think of that...silly me, the Replacement is a third-party role, isn't it?

    January 22, 2014
    Black Yoshi

The Replacement could even pick a Townie, for all he/she knows.

    @Yoshi: Yes, it is :)

    January 22, 2014
    Castrael

What I suggest: Find Mafia and kill them first. Or, if the Replacement is still alive, only two or so Mafia remain and few of our Power Roles dies, he/she has more of a chance to become one of our power roles. Right?

Role claim might help achieve that so that the Replacement doesn't pick a Mafia member by mistake. I'm still against role-claiming though.

    January 22, 2014
    Castrael

Australian Open = distracted Lancer. Sorry about that--I'll be better after this week!

Anyway, a roleclaim isn't a good bet at this point IMO, but we should consider doing one a little later on. The Mafia are going to be able to narrow down the potential power roles fairly quickly with the Mafia Investigator, so they'll have less time to hide than usual. Additionally, I don't see any of our power roles as being especially crucial to our success--the Tracker is decent but is more likely to watch one of our own than not and can't even catch the most powerful Mafia member, while the Nurse has two cool but limited abilities (roleblocking is good but there's no way to tell if they hit a Mafia member, and the doctor ability is very hit-or-miss and is probably best used to protect one of the Lovers. Certainly if the Lovers/Oracle go down, it would make a roleclaim a bigger possibility, but they're liabilities for any potential roleclaims for now.

    Life's path is never straight.

Can someone clarify the Oracle for me.

So the Oracle picks someone each night. If the Oracle is night killed that night the role and the name of the person they picked will be revealed to the Town. This could be a double edged sword. It would be great if the Oracle picked a Mafia player. But what if they pick a Town power role and die? That person gets a big target painted on them. And if it's the Tracker, the Nurse could protect them, but the Tracker would also be roleblocked. And if it's the Nurse, they can't protect themself.

To add to the replies Apollo quoted, these also caught my eye:

I almost always prefer killing, but a No Kill with these roles isn't a mistake like it would have been in the last game, so I won't cry if that's the route we go. Going to stick with my PN vote, just on the hunch, though I'm open to anyone on the Castrael bandwagon.

Sorry for being so quiet, been busy setting up for the Adventure game.

Castrael is usually pretty obvious as Mafia, as I've said many times in the past, and this game she's not really giving off any kind of Mafia vibe. She just seems like typical Castrael to me.

I know a lot of you like your Day One let's try and get someone killed because day one is boring, but I find Day One pretty useful regardless of the kill outcome... Still I'd prefer no one has to die unless there's an obvious slip up, probably because I'm usually someone that dies early and I feel sorry for anyone else that does (because it's so boring to get killed off right away all the time).

So with all that said my vote is going to come as no surprise.

    Night 1

The passengers tried to seek a way out of their unfortunate situation. Four of the seventeen of them were killers, but everyone seemed so innocent. None gave the slightest impression of being a cold-blooded killer. And even if they had any leads, what would be done?

Tensions were high and names were thrown around. But in the end, the passengers weren't sure what to do. Some went back to their cabins, others went for a drink in the Dining Car's bar. Most stayed in the halls sharing their theories with one another.

The day went on with nothing happening. Sunday morning drew closer, and the passengers were expecting the worst.

    @Cas: Here you go.

The afternoon sun cast all of her brilliance atop John Sullivan’s shiny skull, slowly emerging from beneath his rapidly receding hairline. He glanced around him, trying to make sense of his surroundings. He was seated on a coach bus, on his way to Florida on a summer marching band trip. The hum of the diesel engine was almost inaudible over the sounds of people snoring. By now, a good seventeen hours into the twenty-four hour trip, the trio of coaches should have been somewhere in the mid-south. But what was outside the bus didn’t look much like the rolling hills of Tennessee; in fact, it looked more like John’s hometown in the Midwest. And what was the sun doing in the sky at three in the morning?

The bus pulled to a stop, and the forty or so passengers rose and started to offload. As John struggled to extract his bag from under the seat in front of him, the heavyset woman who had occupied John’s window seat stepped over him rather than waiting for him to stand up and move first, providing a sense of claustrophobia in all the wrong ways.

“Look, buddy, ya gonna get off here or watt?” the driver asked, his gruff voice combining with his rather strange accent to lengthen the last word to nearly unprecedented proportions.

“Oh…uh, sorry, I was just leaving…” John muttered uncertainly under his breath, and he barely made it off the coach before the door swung shut — or, rather, was slammed shut, a sound which for some reason or other made John’s nerves go ballistic with anxiety — and the frail yet snobby driver put all his weight on the accelerator. The bus took off, leaving a mystified John in its dust.

John took a minute to take in his surroundings. He was on a street in his hometown. A lake was visible just a few hundred yards away; for a lake that was normally about as healthy as — well, as healthy as the bus driver, who had appeared so malnourished it was possible to see bones you shouldn’t normally be able to see — the lake was unusually beautiful. What was left of a mild summer storm drifted across the sky in the distance, possibly somewhere over Atlanta, around where the buses carrying John Sullivan’s marching band should be traveling by now. The street was empty, devoid of anything John could call traffic besides a few Mopeds down the street and a dune buggy whose windshield was covered in tickets just a few feet away.

Before he could make out what was happening, John found himself wandering down the street. A gas station appeared to his right — Damn, gas is already at five bucks a gallon? John found himself asking his subconscious, to which it refused to reply — and a block of apartments that should have been brand new but for some reason were visibly crumbling materialized to his left as he approached an intersection that should have been busy but was devoid of any traffic besides a few cop cars who waited for the maniac drivers who never came.

How the hell had he gotten to this town, this city which he had lived in for his whole life yet seemed so foreign to him today? The last thing he remembered was of being on the coach bus with the band on the way to Florida. The buses had found a rest stop just a few hours earlier to allow the kids in the band to get ready for the night shift, and now all but a few were fast asleep. John had found himself unable to join them, and had resorted to reading by flashlight instead. The last thing he remembered was turning a page in that book, and then…nothing. It was all a blur, such a blur that his wife’s vision was 20/20 compared to it, and she was legally blind.

John found himself hesitating as he tried to remember, tried to find out how he had come back all eight hundred miles in such a short time. He remembered th—

“OOOMPH!” he cried out as something made hard contact with his midsection, and for a moment he saw stars. As his mind returned to reality he collected himself from the ground and realized it wasn’t a thing which had hit him — or if it was a thing, it was the hottest damn thing he had ever seen. Her long flowing brown hair made him want to melt with admiration. Her blue eyes were a pair of private oases to which only she, and now he, had reservations. And that figure…

“WHO ARE YOU?!” the woman shrieked. It was a shriek more of outright frenzy than of wonderment as to his identity.

“Uh…pardon me, ma’am, but could you ple—?” John started, but the woman only gave a shriek of horror, spun on her heel, and rocketed off, leaving John standing there in a daze, trying to remember how to finish the sentence.

“What the hell was her problem?” he wondered out loud, and collected his own luggage and continued on his way.

As he moved on, it became apparent that whatever problem the woman had had with him was spreading to other people. The door opened to a nearby bar and a man in bartender garb emerged, took three steps out, and the minute his eyes met John he spun around and burst the door down as he barreled back into the pub. A woman opened the door of her car, saw him coming, and sped off without even closing the door again. He started to cross an intersection but stopped after just three steps past the sidewalk to make way for an oncoming bus; but the driver took one look at him and nearly overturned the large vehicle as he aborted his left turn at the last second and tore down the street in the opposite direction.

“What the hell is going on here?” John asked himself as he moved on.

It wasn’t long before he arrived at the familiar, old-fashioned-looking façade of a high school. Windows covered the façade and a sign proclaimed the old school’s latest name from the intersection of two streets: WALTER C. REUTHER CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL.

He found the nearest unlocked door after trying about a hundred and failing miserably at each one; he proceeded into the maze of classrooms beyond and within minutes he had sought out the school’s main office. He found the door and entered.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” he asked the receptionist, who instantly backed up to the wall in terror and started sidling toward the nearest escape route, a corridor just to her right.

“I’LL GIVE YOU ANYTHING, JUST DON’T HURT ME!” she shrieked.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” John reassured her, “I just need to use your phone.”

“OKAY, GO FOR IT, JUST DON’T HURT ME!” the receptionist shrieked again, then found an alternate corridor and was gone almost before John had a chance to blink. He found a phone within minutes and dialed a familiar number, one he realized he knew by heart but could not remember whose it was.

The phone on the other end rang once…John could feel the wave of anxiety building up within his body.

Twice…he visibly began to shake, and beads of sweat poured down his body.

    Thrice…

“Hello,” a woman’s voice said. “Sullivans.”

“Sullivans” had hardly left the phone receiver when John exploded in relief: “OH, THANK GOD! MARY! Y—!”

“Mary?” the woman asked, obviously confused, sending John’s words flying elsewhere besides his own mind.

The garble of words that became his reply left his mouth so quickly he sounded like he was insane: “Yes…y-yes — honey, is — is that you?

“No…sorry, this is her babysitter. Mrs. Sullivan’s away at a funeral.”

“Funeral?” What was this about a funeral? Was this woman crazy? Why the hell was she talking about funerals?

“Yes…a funeral,” the woman continued, her voice showing signs of grief. “Her—” A pause as the woman struggled to find the words. John could tell she was stifling sobs as she continued: “Err…there was an accident last night in Tennessee…a bus overturned and fell off a mountain pass…there were no survivors…”

John froze, his jaw fell open and the telephone receiver nearly joined it upon the floor as the woman finished her sentence:

“Mr. Sullivan was on that bus…”

When does the night round end? These American times make it difficult for me to tell when a round started.

^ To add on, I realise it ends when every night role does their action but assuming they don't, what time will the round end?
