game 26 this is the end

Posted April 19, 2014 by white lancer

After the grisly demise of Jo Nathan, the Town quickly came to a deadlock. Lightvayne, seeing Jo visit MajorasMask9 the night before, may have thought that Jo shared his suspicions. He started with a vote against Majora, and Roxas soon joined him, but Majora fired back with a vote against Roxas with Feral joining him. However, Bubba the Journalist, who had little stake in the game remaining but who knew his chances were best served to end the game quickly, sided against Majora, and Feral recognized that the deadlock wasn't serving anyone. Accordingly, the Town gathered together, whispered a silent prayer to themselves, and hung Majora in the middle of Town Square...as it happened, right where Redack had been executed way back at the end of Day 1. If they were wrong, they were dead...

...but they weren't wrong. As Majora hung, a couple of shurikens fell from his pocket, and the Town knew he was the dreaded Ninja. He had come so close and fought so hard, but ultimately Majora and the Mafia were defeated.

GG all, but still disappointed I didn't win after all that :'(. But I didn't think I'd win after Bubba put that third vote in anyway.

You know what my problem is? I let people fool me into believing I am wrong, even when I am right... for the wrong reasons.

I actually had both Majora and B. Yoshi pegged early on but allowed myself to be distracted. Then, I talked myself into believing that Majora was SK, and after that fell though, I got frustrated and played with my emotions.

Was a fun and interesting game, and I did better then I thought.

I wanted to contact you Bubba but was so hesitant. I felt there was a much greater chance that you'd write an article about how I was mafia and contacted you in private, rather than actually working together :(.

And glad to hear you enjoyed it Lightvayne :). Was worried that inactivity would kill the game over here but it still seems to be going pretty strong, and that was one of the more fun games (on my end) that I've played in a long time.

Maybe stick around for more if you have the time? :) (haven't checked on SMWCP2 in a month or so, is it still aiming for a Summer release?)

I intentionally mentioned something about wanting the mafia to contact me to set up one final fake journalist article, but like I said in the thread, my credibility was shot. No one would have believed me. I was content with my two points.

White Lancer in the dead thread talked about how third party roles add an deeper level of detail to the game. Couldn't agree more. The stuff with Apollo and the mafia were brilliant, and turned around what was a so-so game into one of the more fun games I've played. More roles with this in mind should be implemented.

I was PISSED when my Apollo point was stolen from me by the Governor, but her reveal really made the game.

@ Majora: Yeah its still riddled with bugs, but I've been working on it a bit today and its turning out to be one of best stable bases we've had in a long time. I would love to get this hack released by C3...

Anyways, this is a really great site. a lot of I wouldn't mind carrying over the Mario Kart Game I host to this place too if there was enough interest in it :P

Nice, I know there were a lot of global bugs last time I checked the base ROM (you may remember https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onWw_amMn_c .) Speaking of which, I've been meaning to get a custom block in my level updated for over a year now (PM'd SNN once or twice but it never got inserted.) I'll have to send it to you sometime since I think it's still broken.

Anyways, this is a really great site. a lot of I wouldn't mind carrying over the Mario Kart Game I host to this place too if there was enough interest in it :P

I could probably help with this and bring it to Xhin's (site owner) attention. I've been interested in that for a while now but never really took the step to try it out. I imagine there might be some interest :).

And I'm not sure when the next game will begin, but I don't imagine it will be too far away. First, the host of the current game will post the Player Points earned from this game (just a for-fun record, but 20 points are needed to host a game.) Signups for the next game are usually posted shortly afterward, and people decide if they want to host, with priority given to players who have more player points and have hosted the least number of games. From that point, it's up to the host when the game will start :).

I guess it was inevitable, but at least I went out on a high note.

I hereby retire from Mafia(despite being right about Majora being guilty). Not only do I absolutly suck at this game, I couldn't read another player if they were an open book), but it seems my impatience and frustration have pissed several people off. I think it's best for everybody if I stop playing.

I hope you SMWC guys decide to stick around the site.

That was a pretty fun game. I have to say the part where the SK suddenly broke free and went against us made the game much more exciting. (Even though it kind of screwed us.) Don't think I've ever been put in that position for as long as I played mafia.

Definitely going to have to step my game up haha.

EvilGuy0613

Good game everyone. I thought you had them there Majora. Great job!

You've said you won't play anymore before, Feral. And yet you came back. Granted some of the others are tired of you going off in a bit of a huff. It's just a game. If you vote the wrong person off and lose, well that happens. It almost did this game and the Mafia would have been thrilled. The point is: people get over it and are ready to kill each other the next game. No big deal. And you might not be good at reading people but that doesn't mean you should stop playing. The big question is, do you have fun when you play Mafia? I do some things that I'm horrible at. But I do try to have fun doing them and so I keep trying my best and I'm still horrible at them. So please don't quit if you enjoy playing Mafia.

I just feel like I faded into obscurity.
I guess I'll have to play next game like I really mean it.

I lost track of the point I was at in the dead thread so I stopped reading it, and it was tough to follow the game without any sort of bookmark to remember what post you left off at.

@Feral: The only thing that really upset me was how you basically voted for me to end the game. If I was a townie that would have sucked :). It probably wouldn't have changed much anyway seeing as Lightvayne didn't seem like he'd change his vote, but it was still frustrating to end on that note.

That said it is just a game and shouldn't be a big stressful thing for you. I mean I can definitely see how it can be frustrating--especially considering the amount of time you normally need to invest into it--but at the end of the day whatever happens happens and I don't think anyone will have hard feelings. Just try not to let things get to you personally when they happen I guess.

@SDY/EvilGuy: I remember that game, and felt so bad for killing you SDY :(.

Mostly remember that game for the Dreaming God gambit. Looking back, I played that so poorly and it seems cringe-inducingly obvious I was guilty/lying in the main thread. A lot of what I did was OOG private messages to put people on my side though, and it somehow got enough votes in my favor.

@The mario kart game

I've looked at it: http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=56343

A lot of it could definitely be done in NIFE (the new game engine), which will be done within the week. Mostly there will be an easier way of tracking items/coins and players will get to actually make moves via select boxes/checkboxes (which you'd then be able to see in a special panel).

Could load some stats relatively easily, although wouldn't it be cool if the main post showed a racetrack with the player avatars spaced on it where they are? (automatically of course)

@Mafia: game 27

Speaking of NIFE, I might need to host the next mafia game so I can be on call if the new engine breaks at all and can identify ways of improving the hosting experience.

The main differences you guys would notice in NIFE are role-specific actions (not just voting!), having multiple roles (ex -- mafia, executioner) and a slight aesthetic upgrade.

If I hosted, I'd probably bring the game back to its roots, with a couple additions that bring out the new features of the game engine.

Great game, guys. The role was really interesting to play as - living the legacy of Moonray (RIP Night 0 - Day 1) was great fun (and I love killing Mafia (:$)). If anyone sees eXcavator though, tell him I'm going to kick his butt.

Just kidding, also really glad you new players enjoyed the game ^_^ I'd love to see you guys stick around.

That Mario Kart Game would be killer as an IRL board game (actually, come to think of it, it sort of reminds me of the Perilous Palace Path board in Mario Party Island Tour). They could (and should) also do something like this in the next Mario Party.

Just curious about how much control hosts will have over thread access.

1)Can you change which roles can access a specific thread after the thread has been made? Can't think of a solid useful example like I did earlier, but basically what I mean is, can you make a thread that can only be accessed by a "Cop," but then change the thread later so it can be accessed by a "Watcher?"

2)Will you be able to set *players* to have access to certain threads? Example: The Chef role in EpicMafia picks two players during the day round that have a meal together. Could we make a "Dinner Date" thread and only give access to Player X and Player Y, where players X and Y can be different each round?

3)This is more a question about how things will be handled post-game. From my understanding of how things are now, each thread has a property that stores the "Role" of that thread. Ie, we have a "Cop" thread, that the "Cop" role can access. When the game is over and roles are removed, everyone can gain access to the "Cop" thread because the "Cop" role no longer exists. However when a new game starts and a "Cop" role is used again, all of the old "Cop" threads from previous games can only be opened by the Cop. How big of a change will this be with NIFE? Will we be able to view role threads from older games when a new game is in progress? Will we be able to view the threads when the game is over like we can now?

@Black Yoshi: The original game I made years ago was an actual board game and pretty much followed the format I still use today.

@Xhin: Not sure how far you read into the thread but a good portion of the game is now run by these stat cards I coded below

Its fairly easy to maintain as the person running the game just needs to edit a simple text file. I haven't looked into the NIFE system yet on here, but I am interested to see what possibilities can come from it.

@SDY I know FP on the smwc board took over the "User Party" game which is basically a spin off of it. Overall it doesn't seem to be doing too bad though I wouldn't mine seeing some improvements on it :P

To kinda get back on topic here, is there a place that explains the point system here for mafia?

At the top of the page under the red and white mafia banner are a few tabs. One of them says Player Scores Info. That tells you how to get points. The host awards points manually, and Lancer hasn't gotten around to it this game. He'll post them here though, usually with a few comments behind his rationale.

April 21, 2014
The Bandit

Overall, I thought this was a pretty good game. I felt like the Mafia/Town was pretty well balanced. The Serial Killer was certainly underpowered--perhaps a Bulletproof Vest was in order--but they still managed to make it pretty far despite some pretty bad luck this time around (two high-profile targets and what turned out to be an inactive player--eXcavator even cast the final vote to put Redack into Executioner range on Day 1!). The Admirers I think are a fun role (they were Cas's idea), and while allowing OOG defeated some of the point, they were already on the weakest team so I do feel like allowing them to contact the SK was better in this situation. As for the Gunsmith, that role straight up scared me because I could envision it being very swingy, and probably more helpful to the Mafia/SK than the Town--the Mafia basically get an extra kill if the gun lands in their hands (with a chance of revealing, of course), while a Townie has a great chance of simply hitting another Town player. That didn't happen this game because the Gunsmith made wise choices and then died early, but the potential was there. It's a fun role but it could screw with the balance a lot.

The other role that might have screwed things up was the Paranoid Gun Owner, but that could pretty well screw things up in either direction. Of course, that one wound up with little impact as well. With both of the potential 'swingy' roles out of it, the more traditional game actually led to a pretty good one. There were a lot of detection roles, which could have led to an easy game, but since the Ninja survived so long the Mafia were able to stay in it right until the end. The simple threat of the roles kept Black Yoshi inside at night more often than not, though.

On to the points!

Town
Lightvayne - +4 (1 surviving, 2 victory, 1 good play)
Feral Wolf - +4 (1 surviving, 2 victory, 1 good play)
Roxas - +3 (1 surviving, 2 victory)
Jo Nathan - +3 (2 victory, 1 good play)
Speed Bike Pro - +2 (2 victory)
Kyon - +2 (2 victory)
Lady Flare - +2 (2 victory)
chiefsonny - +2 (2 victory)
Shadowwalked - +2 (2 victory)
Hindenburg - +2 (2 victory)
SDYoshi - +2 (2 victory)
Pirate_Ninja - +2 (2 victory)
Marvalo - +2 (2 victory)
RockyT - +1 (2 victory, -1 inactivity)

Mafia
The Bandit - +2 (2 good play)
MajorasMask9 - +2 (2 good play)
Black Yoshi - +1 (1 good play)
Count Dooku - +1 (1 good play)
EvilGuy0613 - 0
hezekiah - 0

Serial Killer
Apollo Justice - +2 (2 good play)
Moonray - 0
eXcavator - -1 (-1 inactivity)

Third-Party
Bubba - 3 (2 influencing lynches, 1 survival)

The points this time were a lot harder than they have been for any other game I hosted--there were a lot of people and it went on for quite a while, so some of the good play may have gotten lost in the shuffle. I started out by giving good playing points to about half a dozen more people, but I realized that I was largely awarding those points purely for activity and I generally want to be a little more demanding when I give out the good playing points--I will certainly listen to arguments about them, though! Shadowwalked deserves special mention here--I suspected at the time that he saved Apollo because he had already struck a deal with her, and if that's the case I think he certainly deserves a good playing point because that move saved the Town. If that wasn't his intent, though, it was a questionable play at best. :) Feral shares top points (with Lightvayne) mostly because he got an extra one for surviving; I don't think he was the best Town-sided player this game, but there was definitely a time during the game where his instincts were on point and were pretty much driving the Town forward, so I think he deserved a point for that even if he didn't finish as strongly as some others.

The Mafia/Serial Killer teams were easier to assign points. There's certainly an argument to be made for either Majora or Apollo getting the full 3 points for good play here, but for now I've stuck with 2 for each. Bandit seemed pretty key in the Mafia discussions and it looked like he was relatively under the radar until Apollo killed him, so I gave him 2 as well. Dooku and Yoshi are a little questionable but I think both were helpful enough in strategy and did a decent enough job at evading suspicion until the Journalist/Apollo outed them, so I settled for 1 point each. Also almost gave EvilGuy a point for lasting as long as he did, but I think that was largely due to him being low-profile, so for now I've stuck with 0.

April 21, 2014
white lancer

Also meant to address Marvalo--he should lost a point for inactivity, but I believe there may have been account issues for him? I haven't gone with it so far, but this wasn't the first time he's been Host-Killed for inactivity...

1)Can you change which roles can access a specific thread after the thread has been made?

Yes.

, can you make a thread that can only be accessed by a "Cop," but then change the thread later so it can be accessed by a "Watcher?"

Or just give both of those people a "Police Badge" item and then make it so the thread is only viewable by people with a police badge.

The Chef role in EpicMafia picks two players during the day round that have a meal together. Could we make a "Dinner Date" thread and only give access to Player X and Player Y, where players X and Y can be different each round?

Yes, give both of them a "Dinner Date" role in addition to their other roles, and then make it so the thread can be viewed only by those with the dinner date role.

Will we be able to view role threads from older games when a new game is in progress? Will we be able to view the threads when the game is over like we can now?

Yes and yes. The current system is based on post topics, btw, so you can mass-change all the topics to give people access to older threads. NIFE is based on a separate database entirely. When the game ends, the old thread-role locations are archived, but the game id itself changes. Probably in version 1 it will just throw out the old thread-roles permanently, leaving behind just the posts.

The Mafia hosting panel uses accounts in order to assign roles, gives you the ability to vote, and also dictates who can post in what thread or open what thread. If Marvalo was a power role, he wouldn't have been able to open that thread without being logged into his account, and also wouldn't be able to post in the day thread (when you're dead, you lose access to posting in it since your role is only allowed to post in the dead thread). IIRC he did post in the Complaints forum about not remembering his account password, and when someone (Feral I think) offered to help, he refused the help or something like that. Right now you're able to post in the thread because there's no roles assigned, and no permissions granted.

Marv's issue was completely my fault. I didn't recognize the name on his e-mail and sent it to my spam folder. I figured it out just today while cleaning out my filter.

List is in order with players who have priority to host at the top. But as has been stated, Xhin would like to host the next game, so if no one before him on the list has objections that shouldn't be a problem. @Majora: It's up to you. I know what my mistake was and it'd be silly that I didn't. I was upset at myself because I know how much you guys wanted to play after waiting for so long. I rushed the game, didn't take time to read the rules, etc. it was my fault.

I do plan on hosting again, but I'm hoping that NIFE'LL be a lot easier. And I want to play Mafia for a while so hosting a game probably won't be in a couple months until I fully understand everything.

I thought of that, but I really want to make use of the new features for this next game, so future hosts can get a feel for what NIFE can do for this game.
