Game 6: Challenge of the Chosen

The Story:
Mortals may not realize it, but informed sources claim that divinity can be very, very boring. Birthdays lose their pizzazz after the first two hundred or so, and holidays come and go like the seasons. By the time you're a thousand years old, odds are there aren't many things you haven't done. Some immortal beings handle this with grace and dignity, amusing themselves with the daily lives of mortalkind and watching the rise and fall of civilizations.

This story is not about those immortals.

Every ninety-eight years or so (because someone always gets impatient waiting for the centennial...), three mighty gods of combat have taken to hosting a tournament. And since deathmatches between fighters who can't die tend to drag on, they've taken to drafting more...fragile warriors for their cause. Fighters from the realm of mortals are thrown into an arena and challenged to engage in a battle to the death for the amusement of their divine hosts - a group of self-important, battle-loving beings who are simply bored enough to find the lives of lesser creatures disposable. So, uh...sorry about that.

The gods have chosen their combatants once again. Who will emerge as their champion?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Game:
  • Players will fight to the death until the last warrior standing is crowned champion of the arena. Go solo or form a temporary alliance to get ahead - just make sure it's you who outlasts the rest!
  • There is no set length to the game, but the gods of the arena want to be entertained! Bore them and they may be inspired to cause a little...chaos.
  • Players will receive three actions per round, and each round will last one day.
  • Points will be awarded for clever and creative play. Also for winning!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    The Arena:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Achievements:
    Chosen By the Gods - play Game 6
    Around the Arena – visit all five rooms of the arena
    Grabby Gladiator – successfully steal from another player
    One of a Kind – obtain your legendary weapon
    Dressed to Kill – ???
    Champion of the Chosen - Win Game 6
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    The Combatants:
    Xhin, the Perpetually Unstable! (Killed Round 8)
    A young man struggling to find his place in the world, no thanks to his surprising ability to teleport. While he's able to blink from place to place at a moment's notice, he doesn't always wind up where he wanted to be...

    chiefsonny, the Man-at-Arms! (Killed Round 32)
    A well-trained combat veteran, he's able to effectively use weapons of all kinds. Experience is just another tool in his arsenal!

    Count Dooku, the Huntsman!
    An expert on wilderness survival, he could live out his days in peace without any need for the comforts of civilization. With a bow in his hands, no animal is safe - especially the tasty ones.

    T.G. LLight, the Sword Saint! (LLight) (Killed Round 30)
    A mighty knight who specializes in disabling his foes, he'll only reach his full potential when suitably equipped. But when that time comes, he's truly a fearsome foe!

    Helium, the Elementalist! (Helius) (Killed Round 5)
    The forces of nature are mere playthings to this master caster. Earth and fire, wind and water...but not heart. Someday...

    Roxas, the Chameleon Guard! (Killed Round 9)
    An unassuming fellow with a most unusual gift - his skin is able to copy any material on contact. Rock-hard abs and buns of steel are just a touch away!

    Jo Nathan, the Timethief! (Killed Round 15)
    Many claim to live on borrowed time, but this rogue doesn't even pretend that he might return it. Able to slow the passage of time for those around him, he will have been a threat before his opponents are done sizing him up.

    Lady Flare, the Illusionist! (Killed Round 38)
    This wily wizardess specializes in illusion magic, leaving opponents unable to trust their own eyes. Careless foes will be no more before they even understand what danger they're in.

    Pollo Deen, the Chefmage! (Apollo Justice) (Killed Round 19)
    The Food Network told her that magic was "unsuitable" as a means of food preparation. They probably would have said a few more things on top of that if not for the catastrophic butter flood that destroyed their corporate headquarters moments later. Now, she and her food-summoning skills seek glory on a new stage!

    Enthorp Manthrob, the Bioengineered Supersoldier! (Hindenburg) (Killed Round 24)
    The product of scientific curiosity gone too far, this macho hunk's rugged manliness is the stuff of legends. Get caught admiring his chiseled jaw and bulging pecs, though, and he's liable to tear you apart with his bare hands.

    SDYoshi, the Flutter Kick Phenom! (Killed Round 13)
    Matchless mobility is the name of his game, with acrobatic jumps that can easily land him a strategic advantage. His fancy footwork will ensure that victory is always within reach!

    Ghowilo, the Chief of Staff! (Killed Round 32)
    Second to none with spears and staves, his skill with a stick may well put him in the pole position to fell his foes. Legend has it he once killed a man with a stalk of asparagus. The guy totally deserved it, though, so feel free to have a laugh at his expense.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Additional Information:
  • Use of Sneak
    Players may use sneak mode to hide their posts/actions from the view of other players. Buy trust and form temporary alliances by performing your actions out in the open, or keep everyone guessing - it's up to you. Note that making an action in a sneak post doesn't mean I will assume you want to conceal that action when you carry it out, just that you don't want people to know what you will do (or that you've used your actions already). If you want the actual move to be done in secret without being seen, please mention that within the post/action (and a chance roll will determine whether you're seen).
  • Sneak Attacks
    For this game, I'll be using the term "sneak attack" to refer to attacks performed while in hiding. If you're hidden in a room and successfully attack another player, your attack will be more effective than usual. Attacking someone who knows you're there with a post made in sneak mode is not the same thing, and will not warrant any bonus.
  • Item Caches
    Within the arena, you'll find locations that are packed full of useful things. You may take items from them freely (one per action), but what you get will be determined at random. Many of the items within are weapons, and many others are not, but everything has a use - if you wish, you can specify that you want a weapon or a non-weapon item, but which item you get of that type will still be a surprise.
  • Buff Dispensers
    Similar to item caches, these locations will allow you to request magical aid for your warrior. There is no cost (other than the use of an action to request it), but the resulting effects are temporary and may even be undesirable at times. These enchantments can make or break you, so use them carefully.
  • Legendary Weapons
    In addition to the ordinary weapons that are available in the arena, each warrior has a unique legendary weapon that only they are able to wield. They're useful and not terribly difficult to find - it may be as simple as getting lucky.
  • Inventory Space
    Your inventory space is limited to five items (things listed as Effects or Special do not count toward the limit), so you may want to think twice about looting everything you can find.
    Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding the game - I'll be checking the game threads and my notifications frequently. If you need more room for a question you don't want others to see, you can also reach me by email at *radio static*.
    The Recap:
    Round 1
    The twelve warriors gathered at the Dais enjoy a magically-conjured dinner together before starting to go their separate ways. Fighting will be permitted in just one short round, but who will be the first to go on the offensive?
    Round 2
    With combat now allowed, the warriors stay focused on exploring their surroundings and preparing for battle. One warrior gets lucky, while another gets his nose hairs plucked. And on top of all that excitement...the first blood is drawn?!
    Round 3
    There's some creative handiwork on display as the warriors continue to assess their surroundings. No fights have broken out yet, but how much longer can they delay the inevitable?
    Round 4
    The tension boils over as violence breaks out in multiple areas! It was only a matter of time until the gods got their show...
    Round 5
    The fighting gets even more out of control, and the gods of the arena have their first victim as Helium, the Elementalist breathes his last!
    Round 6
    Tensions rise in some parts of the arena as they cool in others. Two warriors adopt very different methods of relaxation.
    Round 7
    No one dies, but an act of environmental irresponsibility occurs that could have far-reaching consequences...
    Round 8
    The arena gets a little less crowded as Xhin becomes the second warrior to fall! A wild encounter takes place in the east, while the entire arena begins to notice the effects of a raging brushfire.
    Round 9
    Roxas succumbs to injuries from an earlier conflict, reducing the field to nine combatants. Friendly bonds still exist between some warriors, but for how long?
    Round 10
    Two warriors learn - in very different ways - the importance of pleasing the gods of the arena. An unhappy god can be a vengeful god.
    Round 11
    Several warriors opt to fight fire instead of each other, but their efforts aren't entirely successful. Fire isn't a competitor in the arena, but it can certainly kill one!
    Round 12
    Violence is light and some warriors simply lurk in hiding, spurring the gods to consider taking certain...dramatic measures to restart the action.
    Round 13
    Injuries are sustained all over the arena as the field narrows to eight warriors! The forest fire in the east finally comes to an end, but not before claiming the life of SDYoshi.
    Round 14
    More wounds are doled out as the violence continues, but no one is killed. One warrior has a very crappy day.
    Round 15
    A very unorthodox fight leads to another casualty - Jo Nathan meets an unfortunate end!
    Round 16
    One lucky warrior cheats death, while another nearly puts himself in the grave!
    Round 17
    A round of quiet respite and recovery...except for the one warrior who gets attacked. At least nobody dies.
    Round 18
    A round of quiet preparation and planning...except for the one warrior who gets attacked. At least nobody dies.
    Round 19
    A round of quiet reflection and regrouping...except for the one warrior who gets attacked. At least nobody di-wait a minute...Pollo Deen has cooked her last meal in this world!
    Round 20
    With only six competitors left, the warriors get ready for a fight as they seek out their remaining foes.
    Round 21
    A relatively calm round, aside from a disagreement between one warrior and one of the local spellcasters. For how long will this peace remain? (The answer is "not long" - the gods will make sure of that if necessary!)
    Round 22
    A violent battle breaks out, resulting in no deaths but several injured warriors. The Limbo Lounge seems likely to welcome some new blood soon!
    Round 23
    The brutal battle continues, but still without a single death! Surely at least one warrior must be nearing the end...
    Round 24
    Enthorp Manthrob is overcome by his injuries, leaving only five warriors in the arena!
    Round 25
    The gods grow restless as their chosen warriors prepare for battle.
    Round 26
    More hunting and preparation, as the West Arena's winds become turbulent and the warriors seek to avoid the looming threat of the gods' boredom. Also death.
    Round 27
    Little of note happens among the warriors, but a brutal cold snap takes hold of the North Arena!
    Round 28
    The remaining warriors experience the calm before the storm - a storm that can be helped along if needed!
    Round 29
    Five warriors seek each other, as they seek victory.
    Round 30
    A sudden ambush costs T.G. LLight his life! Is the final battle nearly at hand?
    Round 31
    All four of the remaining warriors are reunited, and the fight to become champion is on!
    Round 32
    Ghowilo falls, followed moments later by chiefsonny - with only two fighters left, the final showdown is at hand!
    Round 33
    The final duel begins, with Count Dooku landing the first blow!
    Round 34
    A bizarre windstorm turns combat into a total crapshoot without a single hit connecting!
    Round 35
    Count Dooku makes an effort to escape the wild weather as he and Lady Flare trade blows!
    Round 36
    Lady Flare puts classic fire safety advice to good use as Count Dooku's whirlwind-based woes persist!
    Round 37
    The illusionary whirlwind is dispelled as both warriors sustain damage - the final battle nears its conclusion!
    Round 38
    In a climactic final clash, Count Dooku narrowly outlasts Lady Flare and is the last warrior standing!
    Hmm will we be aware of the inventory limit?
    July 8, 2014
    T.G. LLight
    once I'm more certain how I want to define the limit, I will let everyone know. For now, just be aware that you can't carry infinity bajillion things :J
    Pirate_Ninja
    I'm assuming the legendary weapons aren't in the caches?
    July 8, 2014
    Ghowilo
    maaaaaybe they are, maaaaaaybe they're not~
    what I will tell you, though, that you'll have no problem identifying a legendary weapon from its description. Also possibly from its name because they're just that awesome.
    July 8, 2014
    Pirate_Ninja
    In this first area and first round, can we search for weapons? Or just pray?
    July 8, 2014
    chiefsonny
    I feel like randomized equipment is more at the discretion of the host and not actually from a known predefined list (except maybe legendaries). He could give you something in the hopes that you use it in a certain way or need it to do the things you'd like to do. This is host-player symbiosis yo.
    Also I kind of imagined that praying would give you buffs or somethin'. He said non-combat moves were allowed, so we can still do things as long as we don't attack other players.
    July 8, 2014
    T.G. LLight
    you're free to do anything but attack each other during the first round, yes - search the room, pray, move to another area, basically anything other than fight. When the second round starts, combat will be allowed in all areas, including the central starting area.
    Oh and be careful I might just kill you with a piece of asparagus
    Ghowilo
    Players will receive three actions per round, and each round will last one day.
    Since this is a 2 day round, will we get 3 additional actions on the 2nd day so if we move to another we will have something to work with?
    July 8, 2014
    chiefsonny
    it's still a single round of three actions - I just thought it might be helpful to extend the deadline for the first round to make sure people saw that the game has started and to give everyone time to look over this thread and ask questions. You'll have the usual three actions for Round 1, and get the next set of three when Round 2 starts. There's no mid-round update for movement or anything like that.
    July 8, 2014
    Pirate_Ninja
    What happened to the Mid-night update?
    2AM is not mid-night.
    July 11, 2014
    chiefsonny
    I actually did start working on it around midnight, but it kinda breaks down to:
  • look over everyone's actions for any that conflict/interact (like if two people tried to take the same object, I'll need to see who acts first)
  • determine which actions are going to work (if any are going to need to be denied)
  • roll some dice to determine events as needed
  • write the result text for every action (possibly up to 36 in the current setup)
  • kick everyone out of their current location to a nonexistent room so nobody sees things they're not supposed to (this is probably where you'd first notice the update is in progress because you lose room access)
  • create new inventory entries, think up and write their descriptions, assign them to the proper owners (fun with statistics: as I type this there are 39 item/effect/special entries)
  • update the descriptions of existing inventory items as needed (counting down the timers on temporary effects, mostly)
  • write the update text for each room where people do things out in the open
  • revise the room descriptions for anything that requires it (changes to the room, players entering/leaving)
  • post the global "round n" reply (this takes like ten seconds but it's the "visible" time of the update so I'm mentioning it happens at this point)
  • move everyone back into the correct rooms (this is where you'd be able to view the game normally again)
  • update the announcements (site announcement, game announcement, intercom text)
  • update the info thread with a public events recap
    ...and altogether it kinda takes a while, especially while I'm still getting my bearings a little and double-checking to hopefully not forget anything. I had intended to start working on the preparatory stages of the update (the ones that don't lock people out of the game) earlier, but was delayed by real-world duties and an (extremely) important conversation.
    so in summary: sorry, it's partially my fault for not starting sooner but also there's just a whole lot to do. Please bear with me for now - I'm just trying to make sure things go smoothly for everyone and people can hopefully enjoy the game. Updates should be quicker as I get more used to doing them...and once you start killing each other so I have less to work on >:J
    Moms are tough and so is hosting. This is kind of why I didn't want to volunteer for host. Look at all those small things you need to make sure are correct.
    Question: I see rolls being done for item creation/obtaining. What is that? Some sort of item durability mechanic?
    July 12, 2014
    T.G. LLight
    something like that, which can affect the result in different ways. The item's description may help clue you in.
    and since you mentioned durability specifically, some items may have a chance to breaking or being destroyed due to a variety of factors.
    July 12, 2014
    Pirate_Ninja
    If you don't know if someone is trying to steal from you.
    If someone attacks and the first attack is not fatal then you will know and can defend your self right?
    July 12, 2014
    chiefsonny
    you'll have corresponding defensive rolls every time you get attacked, even if it's by surprise. It won't cause you to attack them in response unless you actually use an action for that purpose, though.
    in addition, the round update message (the one that comes right before the global "-Round n-" reply, reporting what happened in that room due to everyone's actions) will include something like "Pirate_Ninja leapt at chiefsonny and tried to stab him in the solar plexus, but missed!"
    the reason I gave you that added notice was because it's something that you logically should know and it's in the update posted in that room, but you moved to another area and can't see the update posted there any more.
    hopefully that was clear and what you wanted to know c:
    July 12, 2014
    Pirate_Ninja
    If we post in the comment area and do it in sneak without doing a action can every one in the room read it.
    For example: I want to ask you a question and I don't want anyone else to see it.
    July 12, 2014
    chiefsonny
    yes, you can post in sneak mode with no action included and it should be hidden the same way as if it had one. That's a valid way of asking me a question in private if needed.
    I will most likely respond in the form of a notification, since I don't have a way of making a reply there that only you can see.
    Pirate_Ninja
    Thanks.
    How much time "real time" between the update and the end of the round?
    July 13, 2014
    chiefsonny
    I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but to answer what I think you're asking...I try to get the update started shortly after midnight. I'll never lock players out to start updating before midnight, but because of the way things are designed I may need a little extra time after 12 to be ready to update things.
    I've improved my efficiency in a couple of spots and started doing as much as I can ahead of time to minimize wait, but the last update was easily the most complicated one yet and it kinda balanced out - especially when I thought I was ready only to find out a few last-minute actions had been submitted and I needed to work them in as well!
    assuming I don't get surprise interference of some kind, I should be able to keep it down to maybe an hour of actual downtime? The "what happened this round" post is made shortly after I lock everyone out to start the update, and the "-Round n-" post comes right before I reopen it, so if you look at the times on those after the fact it'll give you a rough idea, I guess. An update will take longer if people wait until late in the day to submit their actions (because then I can't start the related work ahead of time), but I don't want to leave you hanging any longer than necessary (also so I can go to sleep afterward).
    July 13, 2014
    Pirate_Ninja
    One time I made moves while Redack was updating and he didn't count them because he locked the posts. I was able to post because I still had the tab open when I submitted my actions since I got distracted that morning to be off to do something else. Though I would say that was a reasonable deny action. Unfortunate, but fair.
