I was gonna give on Mafia considering on how much drama it caused and how I couldn't even have fun being the fool, people ganging up on me and what not.

But with Lancers hosting it might be different. So I guess I'll be in again.

Best thing to do to avoid any future dead-talk conflicts - ban "hidden" role reveals in the dead thread.

Redack has said this twice and been ignored both times.

I don't see why it's possible to ban dead people from talking, but impossible to ban everyone from talking. It's the same thing. : /

17 players so far! Registration will stay open for about another 17 hours; if Xhin needs more time to finish programming for this game specifically we'll hold it open for a little longer.

And Bandit, I'm not ignoring it on purpose--as a matter of fact, I agree with him on this issue. However, I don't want to make an executive decision to ban OOG talking if the majority of players don't agree and think it'll be more fun with OOG communication. That being said, perhaps Yeano can make a poll asking people's preferences? Or is there anyone vehemently opposed to banning OOG communication for at least one game, just to see how we all like it?

Some people do, I only really did once when I was staying at Dooku's but we were on the same team so it just made life easier to use verbal communication and one time when shadow told me his role but unless we have a proper way to manage it I don't see how it can be beneficial to the game (and in fact it's starting to be the opposite).

The difference is that once a person is dead, they're dead. Any information that they have that they haven't told anyone else would need to stay to themselves. If we allowed dead people to talk to living players, a cop could keep all information to themself until they die, then private message the information to someone. If information is posted in the dead thread by the host or a dead mafia member that contains the roles of other players, it should stay in the dead thread and not go around via off-site messages.

When players are still alive in-game, anything they say off-site is as credible as anything they say on-site. If you're the cop, yeah, you can tell your friend that you're the cop, but who's to say he isn't mafia and is going to kill you next round? The biggest problem we've had with off-site messages were people being too trusting about their roles when talking to other people. Otherwise, it can be a great strategic benefit, giving people opportunities they wouldn't have normally had. For example, I remember back in the Masons vs Cult game, I claimed to be a Mason even though I wasn't. My goal was to get the Cult to not target me, and instead target a real Mason, ending the game in a town win. However, the real Masons thought that I was Cult and didn't trust me, and the town ended up losing because of that. At that point, the identity of one of the Masons was known to everyone; if I had been able to contact them and told them what I was doing, the game could have had a totally different outcome.

That said, in the past 7 games I haven't talked to anyone off-site about the game, mostly because I don't talk to anyone aside from Yeano on a daily basis. But I know there were a few times when I wish I could have talked to one specific person out of the group to try to cooperate with them in some plot to trick the mafia. I can think of a lot of times when I've been able to use one-on-one conversations with people to influence a win from both the mafia side and town side.

That's not exactly what I meant. I meant, it seems a lot of people are in favor of banning it, but they say it would be impossible to regulate. But, it's somehow possible to regulate the dead from talking. It's not. It's the same problem. I'm not arguing that the dead should be able to talk. : /

Again, it gives those who do it an unfair advantage versus those who don't. Player A gets to see Player B role claim cop, while the rest of the thread doesn't. And if I don't know Player B, or anyone playing Mafia, I'm fucked. I have no way of ever making any kind of deals or finding out any extra information. And Mafia is completely about information. The game becomes more about who's on your IM contact list and less about your ability to read people.

And that's all I'm going to say about it. If you guys like the strategy in talking/lying through IM, then keep doing it. I had fun just lurking this past game, and I'll keep doing that.

Yay, #85's in! Wouldn't have felt the same without you since you're part of the group of us who have played every single game. :)

Majora, I think the question is whether those sorts of OOG communications are ultimately helpful to the game. My thing is that I enjoy it when everyone has access to the same information (apart from the Mafia) and are allowed to draw their own conclusions from that. It also makes gambits like the one you pulled in the Cult/Mason game riskier because it depended on the Mason catching your hint, which I think makes the game more fun. If anyone is 100% opposed to outlawing OOG communication for this game, I probably won't do it, but if not, I think a one-game break from it might be fun to try out.

I'm a bit sorry that I had a hand in popularizing OOG talk. I don't normally do it and rarely talk to people on this site on them. One of the biggest problems was that it couldn't be monitored and there's nothing stopping you from doing it. We can only ask everyone out of sportsmanship to please keep within the spirit of the game and that's it. If you're dead, you should stay dead and that means no talking to the living players or at the very least, not revealing game sensitive information. When I did it, I did it sparingly and in hints. That was when I was running around exploiting various rule loopholes or advocating others to do it.

Maybe I might, maybe sign up. When is the deadline and when is the game starting so I can procrastinate or casually forget on whether or not I want to play the game? I'm working next week and I work from home the week after that. The next week is not so opportune.

Tentative deadline for registration is tomorrow at noon, although this could move back if Xhin is working on programming or something. The game would start pretty much immediately afterward.

More roles. Last game was rather boring since 9 of us were townies. The only real mafia role that did anything game changing was the janitor. FBI Agent was basically a vigilante for the town that didn't kill.

I did like the journalist though. Would like to see it in play this coming game.

FBI would have worked better if I played it better and didn't allow my frustration at the town to keep me from arresting Teddy. It also didn't help that I was murdered by the Mafia in a case a mistaken identity.

Anyway, I'll make my decision about playing in the morning.

Anybody seen Shadow yet? Hate to see him miss a game...

I would like to see the Vigilante back so the town has at least on person that can pull off a night kill.

And to even things out and since they normally have fewer numbers let the Mafia have The Assassin back on their team.

I have a preliminary list of roles that I want to include in the coming game all set out, but I can make modifications if necessary (and it will, of course, be expanded if more people sign up).

@Dooku--people complained about too many roles in Trever's game, so I think Yeano's intention was to keep last game relatively simple to avoid role overload. It's also much easier to keep a game balanced if there are fewer roles and the night rounds will go faster, but I'll lean towards putting in fewer vanilla Townies and more special roles.

@Feral--arresting Teddy wouldn't have helped you anyway, since he was the Fool and you died that night. Still no points for you, unfortunately. :( We'd love to have you (and Shadow, and LLight, etc.) play again, but I'll understand if you don't feel up to it.

@Chief--the Mafia will be expanded this round, and they'll have another role in place of the Silencer that I think will be more fun for everyone.

I can't just guarantee you're not going to have night actions, WT, because that would help people to narrow down the roles, but I have given it some thought and there is a way for you to be in the game even if you wind up with a night action. When the game starts (which should be sometime tomorrow) you'll be able to see whatever role you have, and if it's a Town-sided role with night actions you can just leave instructions for the next couple of night rounds (e.g. if you were the Doctor you could say that you'll just protect yourself over the next couple of rounds or something). Obviously if you wind up as Cop this won't be a perfect situation since you won't be around to participate in the Day round, but it would make you more than just dead weight.

If you wind up in the Mafia, your fellow Mafia members would make the decision for your power for you for the duration of your absence. And of course there's always a chance that you'll wind up with a non-power role anyway. Or you can pull out entirely and avoid the possibility of not being effective as a power role for the first day or two. Your call.

I have no problem with it.

The game won't start until tomorrow night (Wednesday) then the 1st night, Night 0 is 24 hours, so that puts us into Day 1 which would be Thursday, and if it goes the normal 72 hours, we are into Sunday.

It's your call.
