gtx0 nostalgic mode features

Posted August 26, 2013 by Xhin

Nostalgic mode is an upcoming feature to the Revamp that shows the site almost exactly like how Mike's GT looked. It should look like a live version of the 2008 web archive of gametalk.com, with slight differences.

Here's the slight changes I know will be there for sure:

Features

  • Quicklinks will reflect current site quicklinks. There should be a lower area for games since I do plan on adding some games forums after the revamp.

  • Familiar faces will have less entries and will be the same from page to page (because the database is the Revamp's FF system).

  • Icons will appear as any of the GT classic icons, if they're not already. No they don't change on every pageload; they'll be fixed but just won't be the same icons from the normal site.

  • There will be a "quickreply" area inside a post inside of having you click "Add a new reply", because that was always an annoying feature of Mike's GT and I'm glad when Daniel fixed it.

  • Forum images, descriptions, mod lists, etc will show up as the forum's current ones. (only without the colors)

  • You'll be able to use any of the GT classic icons we've salvaged in a post because there's no TGT to limit certain icons obviously.

  • Documents will show up as a forum's current documents (maybe with some kind of limit), rather than "forum rules" and "forum news".

  • The current logged-in/altnames system will work alongside the classic username/password system.

Now then, there are some issues that need to be addressed and some questions I have to those of you who would be using Nostalgic Mode:

    Survey

  • Reviews/Tips don't translate into the articles system like I thought they would, and I scrapped the Questions system. (Polls still translate over okay). What's the best policy with Reviews/Tips/Questions? Here's a couple options:

  • --- Program old-school functionality for those areas with the Revamp rendering them as normal posts. So you can make/view tips and reviews as normal, but only if you're in nostalgic mode.

  • --- Make those features just redirect to normal posts.

  • What about Post Editing? That's one feature that you guys really really like, but it's not really an old-school feature. So here's the options:

  • --- Program Post Editing in, but hide it in the "Edit Mode" thing like GTX0 originally had so it doesn't fuck with the old-school layout too much.

  • --- Program Post editing in, and display it as links like it's displayed now.

  • --- Don't do post editing at all because it clashes with the original look and feel.

  • What about post formatting? GTX0 has a lot of formatting that GT didn't have (images, youtube videos, emoticons, colors, etc).

  • --- Drop modern formatting in favor of a cleaner nostalgic GT look. (Bear in mind that = would still work since that was a feature of the old site). In this, formatting would be blanked out like how emoticons are blanked out in mobile GTX0.

  • --- Keep modern formatting

  • --- Keep certain modern formattings (specify which ones you want to keep)

  • Lastly, what modern features do you want to keep (or have an option for) in Nostalgic Mode? Avatars? The list of emoticons on the right? Mafia/Aliens stuff? Please list them. Bear in mind that any modern features you want to keep will conflict with the look and feel of Nostalgic Mode, so choose carefully.
