Islands v3 Resource Mechanics

Posted December 7, 2025 by Xhin

Most resource types have some kind of skilled gameplay mechanic associated with them -- it isn't purely a situation where you harvest stuff. The same is true for Refinement and Crafting as well to some extent. This deepens the gameplay quite a bit.

Wet Sand

Requires: Vessel, Bucket.

Shovel loads go into the vessel until it's full, but the resulting mixture is a combination of sand and water with percentages. Obviously you're getting less sand this way, so you can drain some of the water out -- this drops some of the water, has a chance of dropping some of the sand and drains Stamina. You basically do this process until you have an acceptable percentage of sand by whatever your standards are.

Driftwood

Requires: Hatchet

Driftwood chopping is a way to get Sticks (1m) or Short Sticks(25cm). Each piece is a bit different but has multiple branches that are placed side by side along the main length, and you can make cuts in 5cm increments -- your goal is getting the biggest bang for your buck here. Anything less than 1m gets rounded down into a short stick, and anything less than 25cm gets deleted altogether.

Shells

A tile with shells will have some vague descriptions appear on the grid. These descriptions belong to multiple types of shells (also qualities obviously)

When you pick a shell out, you run it under water in real time and more actual details get revealed in real time -- you can choose to discard one you don't like, otherwise the shell goes in your inventory.

Mussels

  • Optional: Gloves (otherwise you have a 20% chance of losing 5 health via Barnacles.

Mussels appear on a grid with numbers. The numbers show the *appearance* of its size. You can change your view up/down/left right in increments or do a sweep in one direction which does this in real time. This affects the size according to 3D angle formulas. You want the tastier smaller ones -- the big ones are just discarded.

In order to actually pull one out, the number has to be 1 (meaning you're facing it), and then there's a short progress bar to actually do it.

    Crabs

    Required: Spear

Crabs move horizontally and can try to pinch you. This is ultimately a Stamina game.

They'll move either left or right at some speed. You want to line yourself up with their speed so you can stab them. Your controls change your speed (negative makes you go left instead of right). Crabs will occasionally change speed or direction.

There's a narrow window where you're aligned and you can stab. If they decide to pinch, there's a tiny window where you can backstep, otherwise you do this reflexively and it consumes stamina. Moving around also consumes stamina (but it replenishes when you quit), as does stabbing. Crabs have 3 health for stone tools, while metal ones will get it in one hit.

    Coconuts

These can just be collected by hand. No big deal.

    Seaweed

You have a sense of the proportion of different strand sizes. Dive with a progress bar to get an armful -- medium strands have a 20% chance of slipping and small a 50% chance. Anything that slips is lost forever. Because it does take real time to dive, it's better to prioritize seaweed areas with bigger strands, unless of course you just want to gather large amounts of seaweed.

    Forage Fish

Fish move around a 2D grid within some kind of pattern. You set one hand's position and want to put your other hand with the fish in between your hands (and adjacent to the fish). You tap or click once for the fish to dart off the other way and then tap or click again to catch it when it lands on your tile. If your hand is past its dart range then it'll change direction instead.

    Pearls

    Requires: scuba gear most likely.

You need to descend down to where they are, which uses a considerable amount of your starting oxygen. If you run out you have to ascend or you'll start taking damage.

Pearl Clams appear on a grid of big tiles. One will open and close every few seconds, but you don't know which one and it's a narrow window so it's a game of whack a mole basically. Clams without pearls will disappear, making this a bit easier.

Oxygen does go down during all of this however.

    Coconut Trees

This is a stamina management game. You're basically shimmying up the coconut tree (they have varying heights). The goal is to get to the top and not let your Stamina run out.

Shimmying up uses stamina, whereas stopping will let your Stamina regenerate but makes you slide back down a bit. The rate of change here for both changes wildly over time (though you at least get an indication when they change), so you have to pay attention to it -- your buttons are "shimmy" and "stop" and your height left and stamina are tracked.

At the top, you obviously get coconuts.

    Yucca

    Requires: Knife

Yucca leaves have a length and a thickness. You get a clickable row of them. What you want is a set of adjacent leaves where the combined thicknesses are below some range, at which point a knife swing will sever them all and you get the combined lengths amount of fiber. If you go above the range, then you only end up cutting one of them at random.

Cut strands get removed from the list, which collapses back. You can just cut them individually but this degrades more durability.

    Crab Dens

    Requires: Spear

Identical to the crab minigame except a den will give you 2-4 crabs and in order to get one out you have to poke a hole adjacent to one that a crab peeks out -- a whackamole kind of thing with better windows than pearls at least.
