sneak mode changes

Posted January 25, 2014 by Moonray

Sneak mode has been causing some issues for the game, specifically it's being overused and people get the feeling of being alone because they can't see what everyone else is doing... So from Game 4 onwards I'm changing how it works, most of this just adds complexity on the hosting side (but we're hoping to get it automated in the revamp)... So here's the initial version of the changes (these are likely to get altered slightly depending on how well it works out).

Changes

Sneak mode will note feature a failure chance. This chance will get higher every time a person uses an action in sneak mode (regular replies hidden with sneak mode won't count, as they're often use to ask me questions privately).

1. For every sneak action you make, your failure chance goes up by 10% in the next round.

  • If in Round 1 you use 3 sneak actions, you'll have a 30% failure chance next round.

  • If in round 1 you only used 1 sneak action, your failure chance would be 10% in the next round.

  • If in round 1 none of your actions are sneak mode, your failure chance remains at 0%.

    2. The failure chance reduces by 10% for every round you don't use a sneak action, until it reaches 0% again. If you use a sneak action, it continues to go up without any reduction.

  • If in round 1 you used 3 sneak actions, round 2 you have a 30% chance of sneak actions failing on you. If you then used 1 sneak action in round 2 your failure chance will go up by 10% to 40%.

  • If in round 1 you used 3 sneak actions, round 2 you have a 30% chance of sneak actions failing on you. If you then use no sneak actions in round 2 your failure chance will go down by 10% to 20%.

    3. If a sneak mode action fails, there will be no changes made to the failure chance.

  • If you have a 30% chance of sneak actions failing on you and you then use a sneak action that fails, you will remain on 30%. This is because you used a sneak action, therefore it could not go down, but your action failed so it will also not increase.

  • If you have 0% chance of sneak actions failing, and something else causes it to fail (say your target suddenly not being there) your failure chance will remain at 0% as your action failed.

    4. Certain roles will be immune to the failure chance. This allows stealth roles and advantage in their field of expertise.

    5. To help you track your failure chance, it will be logged in your inventory.

    6. Due to the extra work this creates hosts may opt to ignore the failure chance until it is automated, at which point they must use it unless the design of their game is better off without it... By default it will always be used, if a host does not say anything then assume it is being used.

    Existing Unchanged Functionality

    1. If Sneak Actions fail for any reason, they will be broadcast to anyone else in the room.

    2. Unless your role or items specifically allow for it, sneaking between rooms does not hide you. You may however hide yourself once within a room.

So from the point of view of the player, be aware that overuse of sneak mode is highly likely to result in a failure. Check your inventory each round to keep track of what your failure chance is currently at.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also if you need me to explain what might happen in a particular situation, then also feel free to give me the scenario :)
